Design Standards

In 1987, during an early attempt to organize the downtown into a Main Street association, the then standing Design Committee commissioned and produced a very professional and highly developed publication titled “Centralia: Central Business District Guidelines”. Though many things have changed downtown since the production of these guidelines, the document is still relevant. It contains excellent architectural renderings of the building elevations (front views), relevant design guidelines and restoration recommendations for many of the buildings in downtown.

This document is still used by the City of Centralia and its Historic Preservation Commission. Our goal is to partner with the Historic Preservation Commission to update and re-produce the publication for use by the community for educational purposes and any owners of historic buildings. Once the guidelines are updated and adopted as the official standard by the Commission, we will move toward adopting this document as our Design Committee Standard.

We have scanned the original, in its original format, because the document is still very helpful in understanding the role of our downtown association and every member in our community in regard to the high value of restoring and preserving our history through the historic preservation of our downtown buildings.

Special thanks to those who came before us with vision and inspiration to protect and preserve our downtown.
